Many industries are facing a skills gap crisis. Businesses are having difficulty finding the right talent despite the large pool of job candidates. Faced with this debacle, many employers are looking internally to find the future leaders of their organizations.
In 2012, nearly half of companies surveyed by the Aberdeen Group said they had a formalized assessment strategy in place, up from 40 percent the year before, according to Workforce magazine. Companies that have these official processes in place aim to find high-potential talent, develop worker’s interpersonal and leadership skills and set employee performance goals.
Meanwhile, recent findings from a separate study by Spherion Staffing Services may encourage employers to focus more of their HR administration efforts on talent management and communication. According to the job placement company, there is a strong disconnect between workers and their organization.
The study, which surveyed HR managers and workers and then compared results, found only 54 percent of employees agreed with the statement, “Our organization works hard to promote our culture and mission as a company in both online venues and in our day-to-day operations.”
Similar numbers of workers believed their company did a good job of communicating its corporate goals and following through on their mission.
