Job seekers should consider Washington, DC

People looking for full-time, part-time or temporary worker position may find that larger cities – such as New York, Chicago or Los Angeles – have less desirable prospects than, say, Alexandria, Virginia.
Alexandria was just one of 10 cities chosen by Adecco Staffing in a recent poll outlining the top cities to find jobs in 2012. Using factors such as local unemployment rate, job opportunities based on volume of job openings over the past six months and a general economic assessment, researchers were able to pinpoint Washington, D.C. as the top choice for job-seekers.
These findings are in direct contrast with a recent Forbes report which also listed the best cities for jobs, noting that there has been a shift away from public sector and government work over the past year, as the usually highly-ranked D.C. fell to No. 16 on their list.
Adecco placed D.C. No. 1 because of its unemployment rate – which, at 5.5 percent, is far below the national average of 8.1 percent. Also, a number of opportunities in other sectors have sprouted in the area, such as pharmaceutical, technology and nonprofit.
Other top cities included Austin, Texas, because of its diverse economy, and Ithaca, New York, which boasts an unemployment rate of just 5.9 percent.
