Tech positions, salaries booming

According to a recent Dice report, technology consulting positions added 16,000 jobs during the first quarter of 2012, eWeek notes. The total number of available tech jobs, as of April 2, was listed at more than 85,000 – just over 52,000 full-time positions and more than 36,000 temporary or contract worker positions.
This data serves to note that the drive for more flexible work schedules has risen in the technology sector, and companies, realizing this, have created more opportunities for temps and contractors.
Dice's report also found that the New York/New Jersey metro area was the prime location for tech jobs, with 8,932 positions. The Washington D.C./Baltimore region followed with 8,737, then Silicon Valley (5,711), Chicago (3,742) and Los Angeles (3,385).
An earlier study from Dice noted that tech professionals' salaries are on the upswing. After two years of flat wages, average salaries increased 2 percent between 2010 and 2011, from $79,384 to $81,327. EWeek notes that software developers' salaries are surging at around twice the rate of the broader tech population due to a shortage in qualified professionals.
