The number of temporary help jobs rose 40,400 in December, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, as reported by the American Staffing Association. Year over year, that is a gain of 9.6 percent, and the greatest increase in contract workers in nearly two years. Additionally, U.S. Payroll employment rose by 74,000. The U.S. temp worker penetration rate has reached 2.06 percent, which is higher than the all time maximum of 2.03 percent that had been set in April of 2000 and matched last month.
The staffing industry in total added 17,500 jobs in December, which is a gain of 9 percent year over year.
"We expect to see a continued increase in the strategic use of workforce solutions designed to help companies more effectively source and utilize talent in the year ahead," said Richard Wahlquist, president and chief executive officer of the American Staffing Association.
It's easy to save on taxes and other fees associated with permanent workers by hiring out on a contract. Another way to save money is by hiring an employer of record service or other back-office HR support. Bloomberg Businessweek suggests early-stage companies can benefit from such a service because they may not be able to afford an HR department or paying for benefits.
