U.S. Post Service offering jobs for the holiday season

The boost in packages and letters sent around holidays requires some extra help. Many USPS facilities are hiring temporary workers to assist the rush. Des Moines, Iowa and Kansas City are among the cities to recently announce hundreds of open jobs.
The positions include postal support clerks and casual mail handlers. The work will take place in processing facilities, and include such duties as unloading tractor trailers and handling the distribution of mail, Wyandotte Daily news reported. In both cities, the employment period will range from November 16 to January 10. Pay will range between $10 to $15 an hour with a premium for hours worked between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
With more workers behind the scenes, mail can be handled quickly and more efficiently. While the extra help will certainly relieve the strain for existing employees, the move may also bring USPS more business. The increase in sales around the holidays means a boost in online purchases and both consumers and retailers will be looking for fast shipping options. Decreasing the processing time of packages could give USPS an edge on competitors like United Parcel Service or FedEx.
