Zappos one of many stores looking for holiday employment

As the holiday season grows near, more companies are looking for temporary workers to help handle the impending rush of shoppers. The New York Times reports that 496,000 temporary workers were hired in the retail sector in November and December of last year, according to data from the National Retail Federation – a 49 percent increase from 2009.
This year, the potential for seasonal work looks like a mixed bag. J. C. Penney plans to hire 35,000 workers – 5,000 more than last year. Target also expects its number of temporary employees to eclipse 2010's total of 92,000.
Unfortunately, Toys "R" Us is planning on hiring 5,000 fewer employees than it did last year, and Best Buy will hire 14,000 less, a sign of respect for its full-time workers which it plans to give more hours to.
The news is good for Kentucky residents looking for work, as a Zappos distribution center in Shepherdsville is hiring 3,000 workers to prepare for the busy season, WKYT-TV reports. The news source notes that some of those jobs may lead to permanent positions – Zappos kept 700 of the 2,000 temp workers it hired for the holidays last year.
